WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US in our 25th year of the Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race. This unique event is run on a picturesque and well groomed course through the hills surrounding Bayfield, overlooking the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior.

The 25th annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 1 and 2, 2020. Races begin at 10 am on both days, with half of the total race distance completed each day.

THE PURSE • $3,000 GUARANTEED PURSE
​THE RACES
- 80-MILE RACE (10 dog team) 
- 60-MILE RACE (8 dog team) 
- 40-MILE SPORTSMEN’S RACE (6 dog team) 
- 6-8 MILE FAMILY/REC RUN (Sat)
- 6-8 MILE YOUTH RACE (Sun)

The races begin at 10am each day, starting with the 80-MILE RACE first, then the 60-MILE RACE, the SPORTSMEN’S RACE and the FAMILY/REC RUN (on Sat.)/YOUTH RACE (on Sun.)

The 80-MILE RACE runs 40 miles each day; mushers shall start with a maximum of 10 dogs, with no fewer than 8 in harness.

The 60-MILE RACE runs 30 miles each day; mushers shall start with a maximum of 8 dogs, with no fewer than 6 in harness.

Mushers in both the 80-MILE and 60-MILE RACES may have a pool of 2 dogs in addition to those they are racing.

The 40-MILE SPORTSMEN’S RACE (not meant for children or beginners) races 20 miles per day; mushers shall start with 6 dogs, with no fewer than 4 in harness.

On Saturday only, there will be a 6-8 MILE FAMILY/REC RUN; mushers shall start with a maximum of 6 dogs. This race is open to all ages. It will not be officially timed. Youth racers participating in Sunday’s race must participate on Saturday to qualify.

On Sunday only, there will be a 6-8 mile YOUTH RACE; mushers shall start with a maximum of 6 dogs. Open to racers ages 16 & under only (no adults). There will be additional volunteers on the trail for safety during this race. Helmets are required for youth mushers under 18 years of age. Youth participating in this race must also complete the FAMILY/REC RUN on Saturday.

THE COURSE The Sand River Trail System is part of the Bayfield County trail system. It is fully wooded and includes a number of long hills. The trail crosses one paved road and runs on unplowed town roads and old logging roads.

BIB DRAWS Each race will have one bib drawing, which will take place on Thursday, January 30, 2020. Any musher preferring to be in a later start time should note that on their registration.
